Brown Shirts: Stormtroopers who were organised and set up in 1921 as a paramilitary unit led by Ernst Rohm.

Third Reich: Third empire. Term used for the Nazi dictatorship. (Hitler called his new Germany the Third Reich) 1933-45.

Democratic Republic: A political system opposing a monarchy, but based on democratic principles.

Imperial Germany: Germany from its unification in 1871 to 1918. Also reffered to as the second Reich.

Hyper Inflation: In Germany 1923, prices spiralled out of control as the government increased the amount of money being printed. Thus making their own currency slowly become worthless.

Centre Party: Major political voice of Catholicism, but enjoyed a broad range of support. In the 1920s it became more sympathetic to the right wing.

Reichstag: The German parliament created in 1871.

Emergency Decree: Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution which say the president had the right in an emergency to rule by decree and to override the constitutional rights of the people.

NSDAP: National Socialist German German Workers Party. Nazi Party.

SS: (Schutzstaffel) Bodyguards of Hitler.

Reichsmark: New German currency after the 1923 inflation.

Gauleiters: Regional leaders of the Nazi party.

Night of the long Knives: June 1934, when Hitler ordered the murder of about 200 SA leaders.

Autonomy: The right of self-government.

Pan-German League: A movement campaigning for the unification of Germany into one country.

Customs Union: An agreement between two or more countries to abolish Tariffs.

Rule of Law: Governing a country according to its laws.

Anti-Semitism: The hatred of Jews. It became the most significant part of Nazi racist thinking.

SA: (Sturmabteilung) Stormtroopers. They supported the radical socialist aspets of Nazism.

Mein Kampf: "My Struggle" The book written by Hitler in 1924 which expresses his political ideas. Written while Hitler was in jail after the failed Germany Beer Hall Putsch.

Social Darwinism: A philosophy that portrayed the world as a struggle between people, races, and nations. (Survival of the Fittest)

Aryan: Broadly refers to all the peoples of the Indo-European family. However for Nazis it meant the non-Jewish people. Aryans were seen as the superior race by Hitler.

Annexation: Seizing the territory of another country by illegal means.

Arbitration Treaty: An agreement to accept the decision by a third party to settle a conflict.

Mutual Guarentee Agreement: An agreement between states on a particular issue, but not an alliance.

War Bonds: In order to raise money for war, the government encouraged people to invest into government funds in belief they were helping to finance the war.

Recession: Period of econimic slow down, usually accompanied by rising unemployment.

Authoritarianism: The extreme right favoured the restoration of some authoritarian, dictatorial regime. Strong non-democratic leadership.

Paramilitary Units: Informal non-legal military squads.

Self-Determination: The right of a people to determine their own form of government or the nation to which they belong.
