The Weimer Constitution:

  • Creation of proportional representation[1] and a federal structure[2]
  • Germany was declared a democratic state
  • People elected a president every seven years
~had right to dissolve the Reichstag
~appointment of the chancellor
~the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces
~rule and make decisions at the time of national emergency

· Two houses in the German parliament
~Reichstag was the main representative assembly. It consisted of deputies elected every four years.
~The Reichsrat was the less important house in parliament. It was made up of representatives from all 17 state regional governments that were in charge of education, police, and other local things.
~The Reichstag could always overrule the Reichstrat.

· Bill of Rights
~personal liberty, free speech, no censorship, equality before the law, religious freedom, welfare provision, protection of labour.

· Supreme Court to settle different interperations of the law.

The issues of Controversary:
it only lasted 14 years and the reasons for its downfall are:

  • the introduction of proportional democracy
  • the relationship between the president adn the Reichstag
  • the traditional institutions of Imperial Germany were allowed to continue
